About Us

No One Should Be Left Behind

On either end of the leash.

Who We Are

Built on Compassion, Rooted in Purpose

Those Left Behind Foundation is a foster-based, volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to rescuing dogs and supporting people during times of transition, trauma, and change.

Founded in 2011 by Rae Erickson, Those Left Behind was built on the belief that companion animals should never be abandoned simply because life circumstances change.

In 2020, Rae passed away unexpectedly during the COVID pandemic. In the years that followed, the foundation adapted its operations while remaining rooted in the values on which it was founded.

"Our core belief remains unchanged: no one should be left behind — on either end of the leash."

Our Work Today

Meeting Dogs Where They Are

We understand that not every dog thrives in the same environment. Our approach is built around individual needs.

Public Adoption Events

Those Left Behind Foundation continues to host public-facing adoption events, including regular adoption days at Petco, for dogs who are well-suited to busy, high-traffic environments.

For social, outgoing dogs

Pups, Prisoners & Patriots (3P)

For dogs who experience stress, overstimulation, or behavioral challenges in public adoption environments, we operate our core program: 3P.

For dogs who need more support

We do not believe one model fits every dog. We exist to meet dogs where they are, and place them where they belong.

Our Core Program

Pups, Prisoners & Patriots (3P)

The sole active program of Those Left Behind Foundation, specifically designed for dogs who cannot participate in traditional adoption events.

How the Program Works

1

Selection

Dogs who don't thrive in adoption-event settings are selected for the 3P program.

2

Training at Lovelock Correctional Center

Dogs are paired with carefully vetted inmates who participate in a structured training program covering basic obedience, handling skills, and socialization.

3

Placement

After completing the program, dogs are placed free of charge with veterans and first responders as companion animals.

Dogs Receive

Consistency, training, and purpose in a structured environment

Inmates Gain

Responsibility, structure, and valuable skill-building opportunities

Veterans & First Responders Receive

Trained companion dogs at no cost, providing stability and emotional support

Note: Pups, Prisoners & Patriots (3P) is a program of Those Left Behind Foundation and is not a separate nonprofit organization. All governance, fundraising, and financial oversight are conducted under TLB's 501(c)(3) status.
